Closer

Finally, the spree of 5 for 10 ringgit DVDs gave me a diamond in the rough. Amongst my collection of useless rubbish which clearly personifies the tinseltown industry of today, i came across this movie called Closer. I bought this DVD for three reasons, and three reasons alone.

Reason 1. The cover. I thought it looked interesting.
Reason 2. The stunning Natalie Portman. Her beauty far outweighs the synopsis written on the rear of the DVD cover.
Reason 3. Umm, i couldn't find any other movie to fill my quota of 5 dvds for 10 ringgit. LMAO.

Alrighty then. Slot DVD in Picot Player. Get comfy on bed. Look for some butter cookies to munch on. Click Play.

For the first 15 minutes, i had no idea how the timeline was supposed to be represented in the movie. It was THAT confusing. But i told myself to SOLDIER on....since Natalie Portman kept changing her hair colour (and style) throughout the first 15 minutes, and she kept getting prettier with each tonal variety of her quaif.

After i finally got the hang of the time jumps, the movie picked up the pace and started to get really interesting. The cast for one, was comprised of a group of four very good looking individuals, and portrayed their characters brilliantly.

Closer, is a show about a cool four-way roundelay about lust, longing and the cruel things people do to one another in the name of love (and break ups. truly horrid break ups.)

Directed by Mike Nichols, and adapted by Patrick Marber from his play of the same name, Closer charts a time line of emotional highs and lows in two couple's relationships - and charts the two couples' fateful lines of intersection.

The way they described their sexual promiscuity, was truly graphic. I felt as though i was actually eavesdropping on someone elses conversation. Epic writing. I loved the way the actors portrayed their on screen love affair. Natalie Portman was brilliant in her role as an innocent looking, stripping seductress. Jude Law and Clive Owen (at different parts of the movie) played dual roles of extreme emotional rollercoasters. When Clive was happy, Jude wasn't. When Clive shaved, Jude didn't.

It's not a love story for idiots. It's not even cynical. It's ironic. It's how everybody goes through their relationships. It goes through all the issues (and levels) of intimacy.

Lack of trust, the need to know the truth - and the subsequent DENIAL of it, constant bickering, the need to tell you love someone more than actually SHOWING you love someone; it was all there in the movie. In different phases and representations.

I recognized parts of myself and my own past relationships in brief snippets of each character, and found myself wounded at times right along with the hurting people onscreen. I imagine the same will prove true for most people. Closer is very much the story of how much love can hurt, not only in the ways we can be hurt by those we love or the manner in which we can hurt them, but most painfully of all in the way we can sometimes choose to rub salt into our own bleeding wounds.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. It was intense, sexually charged, and a jolt to the system. It will definately open your eyes, and how you view the truth in its entirety.

Watch it. I highly, highly recommend it. Way better than About Adam and Before Sunrise/Sunset.
